Signs It May Be Time for Assisted Living

Adult children are often faced with difficult decisions. Among those decisions is one that greatly impacts the livelihood and happiness of their parents. At some point, aging adults may need to be placed in a senior living community that offers more advanced care.

There can be many fears or questions associated with a decision of this magnitude. Here are a few signs that it may be time for assisted living.

Large Scale Signs

  1. Current/frequent mishaps or accidents. If your loved one has begun to experience little accidents, such as falls, medical emergencies, or traffic accidents, you should look into the consequences surrounding the accident.

  1. Extensive recovery time. Is it taking your aging loved ones longer to recover from illnesses such as colds or the flu? Are they attentive to small illnesses and seeking care immediately to prevent a more serious condition from developing? It is important that seniors seek medical attention when they suffer from minor or major illnesses.

  1. Existing health conditions becoming worse. Aging adults who suffer with chronic illnesses such as congestive heart conditions, Alzheimer’s, or similar illnesses may experience rapid decline in health. Care and attention from family or caregivers family or caregivers is essential to ensure that their health does not worsen due to lack of care.

  1. Trouble managing daily life and activities. Seniors living outside a senior living community may find it difficult to manage simple things. They may struggle to dress themselves, prepare meals, or maintain the home. A medical evaluation can reveal if a senior requires occasional assistance or around-the-clock care.

Signs of Self-Neglect

  1. Unexplainable Weight Loss. Have you noticed that your loved one is losing or has lost weight? Do their clothes fit differently? If your loved one is finding it difficult to shop for food or prepare their food, it may be why they have dropped a few pounds.

  1. Increase in weight. A senior may gain weight due to lack of mobility following a recent injury or illness. Depression may be causing him or her to eat more or make unhealthy food choices.

  1. Unpleasant body odor. Seniors who don’t groom or practice proper hygiene may begin to express an unpleasant body odor. In some cases, memory issues may result in them forgetting to take daily baths. Those living in a senior living community are surrounded by caregivers who recognize changes in hygiene and address them immediately.
